Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a powerful tool that allows us to image soft tissue and bone without exposure to radiation. It is not a new technology but it does require extra skilled training by the provider who does the actual scan. Another advantage of this tool is that it allows us to see joints, muscles, and tendons in motion to help identify areas where injury has occurred. Musculoskeletal ultrasound is also an extremely useful tool to guide a needle into a joint, around a tendon, or into a cyst or other structure. Being able to see exactly where the needle is going to place medication or to remove fluid is invaluable and markedly reduces the discomfort often experienced by traditional “landmark” guided procedures.
