Dr. Charles Blitzer, recently hosted Dr. Godwin Yaw Fosu Opuni, a surgeon from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Dr. Opuni was visiting the hospital as a guest of Dr. Blitzer during a recent trip to the United States.
Drs Blitzer and Opuni first met when Dr. Blitzer spent time visiting Ghana last year as a Healthcare Volunteers Overseas (HVO) physician. HVO’s mission centers on education, training and professional development of the health workforce in resource-scarce countries. Dr. Blitzer worked with Dr. Opuni in Ghana, offering education and training on providing advanced care with limited resources.
Dr. Opuni traveled to the United States to attend a medical conference and made the stop in New Hampshire to meet with Dr. Blitzer. While here, he observed several surgeries at Wentworth-Douglass – including arthroscopic procedures, fracture management and total joint surgeries and also enjoyed time away from the hospital – even visiting Franconia Notch and taking the tram to the top of Cannon Mountain. His most memorable moment on the trip – hearing the stories about the “old man in the mountain,” its popularity in our community and its fateful demise in 2003 when it crumbled to the ground.
Dr. Blitzer will join Dr. Opuni when he travels to Ghana on another educational trip with HVO in January.
